Lisbon information:
The christ statue in Lisbon was built long after the Corcovado in Brasil. It and the bridge (from the Golden Gate Bridge) are homages.
The cod we had yesterday is known as bacalhau - the fresh cod is smoked and salted to preserve it; to cook it, you have to soak it in fresh water, changed often, for several days - this removes a lot of salt and reconstitutes the fish. If you're in a hurry, you can buy the reconstituted fish frozen. You can have pataniscas, cod cakes without potatoes, so they end up thinner than with.
The pork we had is porco peto, a black hog that is protected via DOP (a designation of authenticity, like wines and cheeses have). In Spain, this hog is known as cerdo ibérico, and the cured ham is patanegra.
An espresso, or bica, in a neighborhood cafe in Lisbon is about 70 cents. "Bica" has several meanings - it's a neighborhood, it's a spigot, and it's an espresso. The legend is that BICA stands for: "beba isto com açucar" - drink this with sugar.
A typical 2 bedroom apartment in an average neighborhood will rent for 750€.
Minimum wage is 580€, and the average is about 900€.
Lisbon symbols:
Crows, even though they are rarely seen.
Saint Vincent is the patron saint
Rooster, an informal symbol, related to a legend
