It's the end of October, and smack in the middle of Fall in Albuquerque!
I had to take a few minutes to revisit the Rio Grande Open Space nearby, and check out what the season had wrought*...

High Desert Drive
If you find yourself driving East on Highway 40 from Arizona to New Mexico, do yourself a favor - drive the last several Arizona miles on the frontage road! Take your time, and stop for lots of pictures, *especially* in mid-late-afternoon!
I found myself there just a bit later than optimal, and only pulled off 40 a couple of times. But wow! was my head swiveling!
I definitely need to look into a day trip photo safari route. So far, my thoughts are: drive to Gallup, lunch at Don Diego's (recommended by a friend), kill a few hours exploring the sideroads in the area, then (about 3-4 hours before sunset) drive West to approximately exit 346. From there, drive East on the frontage roads until it's either too dark, or you run out of mesas.

Arizona Short Trip
We just got back from a short trip to Arizona to see friends - Linda was visiting from Costa Rica, and we simply couldn't pass up the chance to catch up! AND, we had a one-night vacation overlap with high-school / Facebook friends, Donna, Jen, John, and Jenny!
Some of the added pleasures:

I Love a Surprise!
I love a surprise! Especially when it involves suspense, and seeing friends who don't suspect a thing!
Last night, friends Donna and Jen flew in to Phoenix, expecting a vacation with mutal friends - they got more than they bargained for when we met them at the door! A couple of hours of pie, bubbly, and yackety-yack ensued :-)

Any Excuse!
I'll take any excuse to revisit a favorite, new or old! Yesterday, I drove from Albuquerque to Phoenix, and made sure to stop at the Mogollon Rim (yep, I even pulled a U-ey when I realized I had missed it*)
From there the road drops *several* thousand feet, and the temperature rises about 20 degrees.
And the vista changes!
Just downhill from the Continental Divide is the high desert
Then comes the Ponderosas and the Mogollon Rim, then - seemingly suddenly - you're looking UP at the mountains!
~~~~~
* for future reference, it is between Forest Lake (on the East), and Christopher Creek (on the West)
Mississippi River in Fall
This Fall, we knew we were leaving Iowa. We wanted to make the most of our remaining time, so we took a few side-trips!
Here is the Mississippi river, which forms the Eastern border of Iowa.
ABQ Rail Yards Market
I love going to art and wine festivals, so it's no surprise that I had fun at this morning's Rail Yards Market!
This is like a festival every Sunday, with all sorts of art, live music, and food - but no wine :-\
It's pretty lively; you wouldn't think so to look at the backdoor
or the backyard
My walk to and from the market held some interesting sights
~~~~
A few days ago, I read this post, and realized I only had a few more shots at this until next year. It's held on Sundays until November 2, from 9 to 3.

Dia de los Muertos
It's Día de los Muertos season in Albuquerque (click here, here, and here for more info), so we stopped in here and looked around
This store is chock-a-block with painted skulls, dolls, masks, jewelry, and whatever else you can think of that you might need to celebrate your beloved dead.
It's also right across the street from Yanni's, on Route 66, where we had a late lunch :-)

ABQ Library Kid's Room
Yep, we're still working on convincing friends to move here!
The Albuquerque main library has nearly an entire floor dedicated to children and their library needs :-)
Youngish kids get a kick out of the "Pirate Boat"
A bank of dedicated computers
Craft tables and an outside patio
Story-time is Saturday morning
Even younger children have a space
With pets
Teens have their computers
And lounge area
And here's part of October's calendar
