Spain 2023 Sevilla La Blanca

Santa María La Blanca is a church in Sevilla that was originally a mosque (11th - 13th centuries), then became a synagogue after the reconquest of Sevilla in 1248. In 1391, it became a Catholic church, and was modified over the next several centuries.

Heavily carved ceilings, with the main altar

Arches and painting

Closer to María of the Snows

Modified remnants of the mosque arches.

In the center of the dome, you can just make out a relief of the bell tower.

We went upstairs to the small museum (2€ each) - I can't say I recommend it - there's not much to see.

Ark of the Covenant

Vestments - you can just make out the matched rectangular jewels (aquamarine?) - a row of 3 near the top, and another row along the bottom

Original tiles from the women's section

Part of the old Jewish Quarter
